In a Greek mythology Chaos was described as a mix of the elements of earth, fire, water and air; dark space, open and empty; a womb from which were born five children of chaos (Gaia, Eros,...).

Or: from chaos appeared a giant egg, then from egg a chick of the world.

Or: god Marduk (Mesopotamia) cuts goddess Tiamat, monster of the prime chaos, in two pieces and creates the earth and the sky out of them.

Heraklit ('Panta Rei - all things flow') declared the chaos to be a true base of reality. The mathematics and physics define chaos as a state of nonlinear dynamic systems.
